03 / THE FOUR VIRTUES

THE MEASURE OF A FINE BRUSH

Point · Roundness · Evenness · Resilience

A fine point

The hairs gather to a precise tip, giving each stroke clarity and spirit.

A full, round belly

A well-filled body spreads evenly without becoming thin or flat.

Evenly aligned hairs

When opened and pressed, the hairs form an orderly, balanced edge.

Responsive resilience

The point returns after pressure, moving with strength and control.

04 / THE CRAFT

PATIENCE GIVES THE POINT ITS CHARACTER

Every fraction matters.
Every step is done by hand.

Hair is sorted, combined and shaped until the brush can gather, open and return with control. These four stages trace the essence of the process.

  1. 01

    Sorting

Each bundle is selected for tip length, fineness and elasticity.

  2. 02

    Aligning

The hairs are repeatedly combed so the point gathers with precision.

  3. 03

    Binding

Different hairs are composed, shaped and tied to define the brush's response.

  4. 04

    Mounting

The finished head is set into its handle and refined for its first encounter with ink.

05 / A SHENYANG LEGACY

FROM A BRUSH SHOP TO A LIVING CRAFT

Rooted in history.
Made for the present.

Hu Kuizhang has long been part of Shenyang's culture of brush and ink. Public records state that its brushmaking craft was listed as Liaoning Provincial Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2007. Today, knowledge of sorting, aligning and mounting brush hair continues to be demonstrated, shared and put to use.

A fine brush is not defined by its first sharp point, but by how faithfully it gathers again after every stroke.
